Art&Act Featuring: Nicoleta Botea: Between Sensitivity, Colour and the Female Gaze
Romanian artist Nicoleta Botea, from Râșnov, creates expressive works in which portraiture becomes a space for emotion, colour and personal interpretation. Her paintings reveal an artist interested not only in the physical appearance of her subjects, but also in atmosphere, character and inner states.
Botea presented an exhibition of her paintings in Râșnov in 2024, while in 2026 her work was also exhibited in Bucharest, marking another step in the development and public presentation of her artistic practice.
Her visual language is diverse and difficult to reduce to a single stylistic formula. At times, her portraits are contemplative and almost melancholic; at others, they become vibrant, decorative and boldly expressive. Strong outlines, intensified facial features and contrasting colours give her figures an immediate emotional presence.
A recurring focus in Botea’s work is the female face. Rather than treating portraiture as simple representation, she uses it as a field of psychological and symbolic exploration. The women she paints appear introspective, vulnerable, self-aware or quietly powerful. Their enlarged eyes and carefully articulated expressions often become the emotional centre of the composition.
Colour plays an equally important role. Turquoise, blue, orange, red and gold appear repeatedly, sometimes creating harmony and sometimes deliberate tension. In several works, warm and cool tones coexist across the same face, suggesting different emotional layers within a single personality.
Nature also enters her compositions symbolically. Leaves, flowers and organic forms surround or merge with the human figure, reinforcing the sense that identity is connected to memory, transformation and the passage of time. In one portrait, the combination of a turquoise head covering with autumnal foliage creates a particularly striking dialogue between serenity and seasonal change.
Elsewhere, Botea adopts a more playful visual vocabulary. Flowing, almost sculptural hair rendered in vivid orange, yellow and blue introduces a graphic and contemporary energy. Another work, depicting a young woman accompanied by two cats, reveals a softer and more intimate dimension of her practice, bringing tenderness and everyday affection into the portrait tradition.
What connects these different approaches is sensitivity. Even when her palette becomes dramatic or her lines strongly stylised, the emotional dimension remains central. Her figures do not appear distant or purely decorative; they seem to carry stories, moods and unspoken thoughts.
Nicoleta Botea’s paintings therefore move between observation and imagination, delicacy and intensity. Her work demonstrates how contemporary portraiture can remain deeply personal while experimenting freely with colour, line and symbolic detail. From Râșnov to Bucharest, her evolving artistic journey presents a painter whose complexity lies precisely in her ability to combine visual boldness with emotional sensitivity.
